As part of Burwood Public Schoo l’s History and English curriculum programs for senior students in 2025\ , children from Stage 3 classes (6S\, 6O\, 65K\, 5C and year 5 students in 54T) will be attending a 2 night/3 day excursion to Canberra. We will be travelling by seat belt fitted coaches.

This excursion is a wonderful opportunity for all Year 5 and 6 students. Students will visit a range of locations in our national capital including Parliament House (old &\; new)\, Mint\, War Memorial\ , Questacon\, Museum of Australian Democracy\, Arboreum\, Aust. Institute of Sport\, National Capital Museum\, Mt Ainslie and a drive by tour of Nat ional Embassies.
Accomodation will be at Bush Capital Lodge in the s uburb of O’Conner in the heart of Canberra. Room numbers will be 6-8 per room (gender based). Students will be asked to nominate a friend or two t hey would like to share with and we will endeavour to ensure everyone gets at least one of their preferences. \;
Meals will be provided th roughout\, apart for lunch and recess on the first day. Please advise rega rding specific dietery and medical requirments\, including any medications which need to be brought. These will need to be administered by staff. St udents are not allowed to carry ANY medication with them apart from asthma puffers. All other medications must be packaged in a clear ziplock bag wi th student name clearly written on the outside. All presecription medicine must be in orginal packaging\, complete with pharmacy assigned label cont aining student name and dispensing instructions. It is essential that this process is strictly followed to ensure the safety of all. \;

Years 4 and 5 will each have a half day incursio n with scientists from Planting Seeds. All students will experience learni ng activities about the importance of bio-diversity\, native pollinators a nd pollination. The culmination of these activities will be the installati on of a native stingless \;bee hive. These native bees cannot s ting or bite and look more like small flies than European honey bees. Howe ver\, they are important pollinators. \;
The incursi on will include indoor and outdoor learning components such as:
- Learning about the importance of biodiversity\, pollination and how we can support our local pollinators as well as the relationship betwe en plants and pollinators. \;
- a Biodiversity Quest involving looking around the school grounds for animals in their habitat and sharing findings with the group \;
- Planting/lo oking at features of plants that attract pollinators\, thinking about whic h flowers attract which pollinators\, if there is time drawing a flowering plant and labelling it + a picture of the pollinator that will visit it&n bsp\;
- Identifying local pollinators and learning how t o become citizen scientists focusing on the importance of collecting data\ , observation skills and scientific literacy. \;
- M aking observations and taking photos (for the BioBlitz) of plants and poll inators in the gardens\, discussion about what was found and where \;< /p>
- Making blue banded bee homes and placing them in the g arden and problem solving how best to support pollinator needs in the scho ol

Mr O'Neill\, Ms Li and Mrs Richardson will be supervising the event with only five students being in vited to attend. They will be travelling to Auburn West PS by car (driven by Mr O'Neill and Ms Li) with details as follows:
Departing Burwood Public School (Chiswick Road\, Auburn) at approx 12pm by car to arrive at 12:30pm. Once finished\, we will depart Auburn West PS at approx 1:30pm fo r the return trip to BPS\, arriving by 2pm. The two teachers (Mr O'Neill a nd Ms Li) will be travelling in the vehicle with the students at all times . Seatbelts wil be mandatory.
There is no expense for this event. St udents must bring their own lunch and recess on the day as usual. We will be departing at the end of the lunch break. \;

This Aspire Higher Leadership event is a full-day student le adership incursion designed to equip senior primary students with practica l leadership skills\, build strong peer relationships\, and inspire them t o lead by example—whether or not they have a badge. All Year 6 students will attend and it will take place at Burwood Public School so no transpor tation is required. There is no charge for this program as the school is c overiong the cost.
